BAD_POOL_CALLER blue screen resolved
Jan. 14th, 2011 06:39 pmXP SP 2
Started with the black screen with message about missing system file. Suggested reboot and went into blue screen with above error.
* No new installations for a while but Kaspersky own updates
* Internals vacuumed and blown out with cold hairdryer
* Fans seem to function properly
* Disk connectors unplugged and plugged again
* All the external connections but screen and keyboard dropped
Would not boot from CD, neither would it boot in safe mode or from previously known good configuration.
They say it can be anything from heat to bad driver version to bad ram to bad disk.
Well ...
Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
\windows\system32\config\system
Upd 1:
* Removed and inserted my only memory DDR532 Corsair 1GB card into its slot
* Thanks to http://www.kindel.com/blogs/charlie/archive/2004/05/26/stop-0xc2-aka-bad-pool-caller-blue-screen-and-bad-memory.aspx
Burned my copy of memtest86 bootable disk (that booted nice all by itself) and it has run 2 passes nicely with no single error reported on memory.
Upd 2:
* would not boot from BartPE bootable (pebuilder)
* would not reach the windows recovery console burned to supposedly bootable disk
* downloading ubcd4win as a last resort so far
Upd 3:
* Got a Hiren 10 disk from the company eng. Booted fine, selected "start Windows mini"
* replaced 5 files under c:\windows\system32\config (system, default, sam, software, security) with files from one of the latest restore points (not the latest one) as described in various places, e.g. here: http://www.softwaretipsandtricks.com/forum/windows-xp/2735-xp-could-not-start-following-file-missing-corrupt.htm
Restore points were at C:\System Volume Information\_restore\RPxxxxx
Rebooted from HD now, repaired Kaspersky database and now running chkdsk on C: :))).
Basics like net connections seem to work fine (downloaded Kaspersky latest db all right).
Looks like end of story.
Long live our IT guy and Hiren compilation :)!
